Ashima and the Stone Forest

In Shilin, the Stone Forest rises like a field of petrified trees. Local tradition connects this landscape with Ashima, a young Sani Yi woman remembered for beauty, courage and loyal love.

In common retellings, Ashima loves Ahei but is forced apart from him by a powerful family. After struggle and loss, her memory becomes bound to the stone pillars. The rocks are no longer only geology; they become witnesses.

The story is often associated with the Torch Festival, when Yi communities gather for music, dance and contests. For visitors, Ashima gives the karst landscape a human voice.
