The Peacock Princess
The Peacock Princess belongs to a wide family of Tai and Southeast Asian tales about a bird-maiden, transformation and reunion. In Yunnan, it is closely associated with Dai culture and peacock imagery.
One familiar pattern tells of a prince who meets a princess connected to the peacock world. Love brings them together, conflict separates them, and the princess escapes by returning to her bird form.
The tale survives not only in words but in dance. Peacock movement, curved hands and bright costume turn the story into a living performance.
